Introduction

Every sporting organisation faces constant pressure for change in many areas - technology, legislation, funding, member demands, and community expectations. In addition, Australian sport is organised largely through the effects of dedicated volunteers, and their efforts need to be effectively directed towards accepted goals. Planning provides an effective mechanism for an organisation to initiate and manage both change and the efforts of its volunteers. The effort demand is worthwhile to ensure that direction and control remain within the management. Planning further allows a common perspective and understanding to be developed and sustained among members who are involved in any present or future activities.
